Research Reports

The Semta research team have a history of strong collaborations with employers, trade associations and Government departments and agencies. Key areas of expertise are labour market research, government data sources and information on skills and recruitment issues, productivity and training. The team have a strong input into the extensive work involved in developing the Sector Skills Agreements for the sectors that Semta represents.

Current consultations and research

The 2009 Labour Market Survey of the Lifesciences, Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology and Medical Devices Sector.

Semta have been seeking the opinions of employers from across the UK on the Lifesciences, Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology and Medical Devices Sector.  The research was conducted during November 2009 and a report of the findings will be produced in 2010.  To find out more click here

Skills and the future of UK Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies

Each year, Sector Skills Councils produce reports highlighting the key issues affecting their sector and the skills implications for their employers. Semta's 2009 UK Sector Skills Assessment summary and full reports are now available.

Sector Skills Agreements

Action plans and research reports to support the action plans for the sector skills agreements are available for Aerospace, Electronics and Automotive, Marine, Bioscience and Metals, Mechanical, Electrical sectors.  The reports contain employer views on the skills needed to maintain and expand their businesses as well as desk research related to the educational and training landscape for these particular sectors.  Analysis of the gaps between the supply and skill needs forms the basis of the action plans agreed across the four nations.

Engineering Skills Balance Sheet reports 2008

The Skills Balance Sheets aim to demonstrate for each sector in each Nation and English Region, the range and level of skills in its labour force that are necessary to achieve productivity at internationally competitive levels.

Pharmaceutical and Bioscience Labour Market Survey

The Pharmaceutical and Bioscience Labour Market Survey collected data from 178 sites in the sector, employing nearly 27,500 people. Overall the picture that emerges is of a sector that encompasses a wide range of companies in a number of distinct sub-sectors, from large multinational enterprises to micros with fewer than 10 employees. The sector is growing and has a high level of recruitment activity.

Summary of the The National Employers Skills Survey 2007

The National Employers Skills Survey 2007 (NESS07) is the fourth national employers skills survey commissioned by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) (Report published 2008). This document is a summary of responses from Semta employers.

2006/7 Labour Market Survey of GB Engineering Sectors

This report is the initial result of 5129 employer interviews conducted by telephone between December 2006 and February 2007. It contains data to provide a GB wide picture of employment in the Engineering Sectors and provide an informed overview of labour market issues with particular focus on recruitment, skills and training.
