The Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies

28 June 2010

Latest on consultations

Summary

While the new government are settling in, we are still responding to consultations raised during the previous administration, particularly those which we think are key to the future success of our sector.  This week, the response to Meeting the Low Carbon Skills Challenge was submitted.  We called for better teaching of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects, and better careers guidance so young people how understand the low carbon agenda will permeate every sector.  We suggested ways in which further higher education can work with business to provide high level skills to support low carbon developments.  And we looked at how those sectors in our footprint such as aviation, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing are already working with Semta and other organisations to develop the skills they need to meet the low carbon challenges of the future.  You can read our response here.  We also contributed to the Alliance of Sector Skills Councils response, which drew in comment from all the SSCs involved in low carbon developments.

Other consultations currently active include the QAA examination of the process for recognising new benchmark statements (a key concern for companies who recruit graduates) and the review of the skills strategy in Northern Ireland.

Consultations provide great opportunity for employers to make their voice heard in government.  Keep up to date on all the consultations which affect our companies via Semta’s policy website here.  Semta represents the views of our employers across government and the media.  If you are an employer in the science, engineering, or manufacturing technology sectors, we welcome your views at policy@semta.org.uk
