The Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies

Consultation - Partial Review of the Government's Official Shortage Occupation List (UK)

From: Migration Advisory Committee
Date published: April 2009
Response
due: 15 July 2009

Summary

The Migration Advisory Committee invited Semta to contribute evidence to its review of shortage occupations in April. In particular, it requested evidence in respect of the methodology used to determine shortages.

Next Steps

Semta responded, utilising its extensive experience in collecting and interpreting Labour Market Information.  Our response questioned the ongoing reliance on Standard Occupational Codes as the basis for analysis.  It also illustrated the difficulty of addressing short term skills shortages through the traditional 'pipeline' of training in the local population, which can take years.
