The Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies

Semta's sectoral support in Scotland

The Scottish Government, through Skills Development Scotland, has a range of programmes to support employers. This sets out what’s on offer:

Modern Apprenticeships (MA)

Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) are geared towards helping new recruits or existing employees gain invaluable skills and industry recognised vocational qualifications. In addition, they provide a range of 'soft skills', including communication, teamwork and problem solving skills, and improved numerical and IT skills - all of which are invaluable to any employer.

Employer Recruitment Incentive

Employers who offer Modern Apprenticeships to young people who may otherwise find it difficult to secure a job or Modern Apprenticeship can receive up to £2000 towards their training costs. To qualify for this incentive, businesses will have to employ an individual who has been unemployed or faced barriers in the past.

Adopt an Apprentice

Adopt an Apprentice and not only will your business benefit from a skilled trainee, but you will also receive a £2,000 incentive. The financial incentive is to help cover wage and recruitment costs of taking on a Modern Apprentice who has been made redundant from another employer.

Flexible Training Opportunities

Flexible Training Opportunities helps Scottish businesses invest in learning and development opportunities for their employees. The programme supports learning activity which promotes improved workplace productivity, helping to increase organisational resilience. Financial support is available to encourage learning and development for your staff, and so help support the sustainability and growth of small businesses within Scotland.

Anyone from Sole Traders to organisations with less than 150 employees can apply for up to £5,000 towards training costs (excluding statutory/legislative training), based on a maximum of 10 training courses costing up to £500 each.

Low Carbon Skills Fund

If you are aiming to adopt processes around carbon reduction, renewable energy, and/or energy efficiency then there is potential for receiving up to 50% of training costs. Employers with les than 250 employees can apply for up to £12,500 towards training costs – based on up to 25 training courses costing a maximum of £500 each.

New Scottish life sciences partnership

Semta and Cogent (the Sector Skills Council for life sciences businesses) will partner to develop, support and improve the skills levels for the life sciences sector in Scotland. Together they will represent employers’ skills needs to the Scottish Government and stakeholders who plan, fund and deliver education and training.
