Iain Gray’s early education in Aberdeen culminated in gaining an
Engineering Science honours degree at Aberdeen University, before
he joined British Aerospace in Filton, Bristol in 1979.
In 1989 he gained a Masters of Philosophy at Southampton
University and has also received Honorary Doctorates in Engineering
from Bath (2005), Bristol (2006) and Aberdeen (2007)
Universities.
After beginning his career as a Structures Engineer working on
Airbus wing development programmes, by the early 1990s Iain had
been appointed Assistant Chief Aerodynamist and subsequently
Project Manager, International Collaboration, within British
Aerospace – with responsibility for project and partner cooperation
studies in early Very Large Commercial Transport (VLCT) and next
generation supersonic commercial transport programmes; and later
for the Future Large Aircraft (FLA) military transport programme
(now A400M).
From 1997 to 2001 Iain held a number of senior appointments at
British Aerospace Airbus – Director Future Programmes, Director
Strategy and External Affairs, and Engineering Director. In 2001
with the formation of Airbus into a single integrated company, Iain
was appointed Vice President Engineering, Airbus UK and then SVP
Wing Engineering Integration Centre for Airbus
In January 2004 Iain took up his current position as Managing
Director and General Manager of Airbus UK – a role which has also
included management of the A380 wing programme.
Iain Gray is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Royal
Aeronautical Society, a Council Member of the Society of British
Aerospace Companies, Chairman of the Business and Industry Panel of
the Engineering Technology Board, a Governor of the University of
the West of England and a Board Member of Semta and Business
