Press Release

Managing for Success

A new practical management development programme, aimed at improving the management skills that companies really need, has been developed and tested by employers in the metals sector. Called “Managing for Success”, this new programme is specifically designed to deliver measurable business improvements by developing the right people management skills that are lacking in many of today’s managers. Skills that can be the vital key to unlocking untapped potential within the workforce.

Now available to any company, particularly those within engineering and manufacturing, where managers have traditionally been promoted on the basis of their technical skills and abilities, Managing for Success combines first-class tutored workshops, in-company project work and competence assessment leading to NVQ Level 4 in Management, in a single, cost-effective package.

Launching the new programme at the Metals Industry Awards Evening in the West Midlands on 23rd November, Managing Director of Caparo Merchant Bar plc, Richard Morley said: “The Managing for Success Programme is designed to give managers the skills they need to manage in today’s highly competitive, global industry. As employers developing this programme, the first thing that we wanted was managers to be able to implement business strategy. We also wanted managers who can set and work to targets and KPIs, and who can analyse and measure what they’ve achieved. We also required managers to be able to identify waste in all its forms, and managers who can improve business performance through the application of lean practices and techniques. But, above all, we needed managers who can manage people.

“Through extensively piloting the programme in our own companies, we’ve already seen evidence that the Managing for Success approach works. From a 14% increase in throughput for a coatings process in one company, to an improvement in on-time deliveries from 75 to 95% in another, and substantial reductions in costs in many processes; the managers we have trained so far are reaping the benefits by being better equipped to change their behaviours and, thus, more effectively manage the people that report to them.”

Companies seeking more information can telephone the Managing for Success team on 0114 244 6833 or email Dawn Vinall. Up to 50% funding subsidy could be made available for companies through MetSkill, part of Semta, the Sector Skills Council for the engineering and manufacturing technologies sector.
