Engineering Diploma Development Partnership welcomes showcasing of new Diploma by Government

The new 14 to 19 Engineering Diploma is being showcased today by the Rt Hon Ed Balls, new Secretary of State for Children, Families and Schools.

The Engineering Diploma Development Partnership (EDDP), a partnership of six Sector Skills Councils working together to develop the Engineering Diploma, is delighted that the new Secretary of State has chosen Engineering as the first focus for public awareness-raising about the new Diplomas by the new Department for Children, Families and Schools.

Ed Balls will be visiting the Southwark and Lambeth consortia today at London South Bank University as preparations continue towards the launch of the Engineering Diploma in 2008. It will be the first time the content has been seen by the ministerial team and marks a milestone in the development of Diplomas.

The Engineering Diploma is an innovative and ground-breaking new qualification which will bring engineering to life in the classroom, enabling learners of all abilities to experience and enjoy engineering. Students will experience the diversity of the world of engineering, learn about the latest Engineering principles, gain general work skills and get the chance to do hands-on engineering activities. Alumni can then get the chance to move on to employment, an apprenticeship, college/university or other training opportunities.

Bill Sutton, team leader for the EDDP, said;

“ The work so far has been a considerable achievement for Sector Skills Councils, employers, employer bodies, schools, the further and higher education sectors, awarding bodies and many other stakeholders. We’re very grateful for the hard work that everyone has done to get the Engineering Diploma to this milestone and to the Lambeth and Southwark Consortia for bringing the Engineering Diploma to life for the first time. “
