Engineering Survey
This report is the initial result of 5129 employer interviews
conducted by telephone between December 2006 and February 2007. It
contains data to provide a GB wide picture of employment in the
Engineering Sectors and provide an informed overview of labour
market issues with particular focus on recruitment, skills and
training.
Key findings include:
- The majority of organisations (66%) employ the same number of
staff now as they did 12 months ago. One in seven (14%) employ more
staff now and a slightly higher proportion (18%) employ fewer.
- Workforce growth is more evident in Wales (17%) and Scotland
(20%) than in England (14%). However, organisations in Wales are
also more likely than average to have experienced a decline in the
number of staff employed (22%).
- Most organisations identifying skill gaps (70%) specify
technical and engineering skills (at all levels within craft,
operator, technician and professional engineering
occupations).
